Enter your height and sex and this returns an ideal body weight estimate from several published formulas, plus a healthy weight range derived from BMI. Before the numbers, one thing is worth saying plainly: there is no single ideal weight for a person of a given height. These formulas were built for clinical purposes, not for setting personal goals, and they should be read as a broad reference band rather than a target.
All four classic formulas share a structure — a base weight at 5 feet, plus a fixed increment per inch above that. They differ only in the constants, which is a reminder of how much they are conventions rather than discoveries.

The Devine formula is the most cited, though it was never intended for this. It was devised to calculate drug dosages — specifically to estimate lean mass for medications where dosing by total body weight would overdose a heavier patient. It was published without supporting data and became a standard largely through repetition.

A spread of nearly 5 kg between formulas for the same person, all equally "ideal". That spread is the honest answer to how precise this concept is.
A more useful framing than a single number is the weight range corresponding to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9:

If the goal is health rather than a number on a scale, these are more informative: waist circumference (raised risk above roughly 94 cm for men and 80 cm for women, with lower thresholds for South Asian populations), waist-to-height ratio (keeping your waist under half your height is a simple and surprisingly robust guide), body fat percentage, and simple functional markers such as resting heart rate, blood pressure and how you handle a flight of stairs.
